I am not a morning person but today I set the alarm for 4 am so Stuart and I could attend the Dawn Service at Canungra. To see so many respectful people, young and old at a small country town is very sobering. The organisers in Australia have urged people to attend for two main reasons, firstly it is the centenary but also to show the evil forces at work in the world that we as a people will not be intimidated but instead , celebrate the fact that so many died so we can live in peace.
I proudly wore my fathers medals from service in the Second World War. Dad enlisted in 1940 and served in Lybia in the siege know as The Rats of Tobruk, Lebanon on account of Rommel's advance on Alexandria, the battle of Al Alamein and two years in Borneo in the invasion of Takakan.
My dad very rarely spoke about what he had experienced only occasionally mentioning things like when he was standing next to a soldier who dropped dead with a bullet to the head. The conditions under which they served were at times appalling and I know dad suffered in later life because of this.
I am very proud of my dad and proud to be an Australian
